SWIM SCHOLARS

John Sargent talks about his experience as a UH Scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
During the BUSA Team Championships in Bath I provided the team with full points from my 3 individuals, with my times being on my Personal Best in the 50 and 100 backstroke. At the BUSA Short Course Champsionships, I came 3 rd in the 50 Back in what was a Personal Best at the time. However I did not perform as well as I should have in the 200 and 100 back. With these performances, I provided a large proportion of our total points to place the University 8 th overall and 6 th in the mens category. In the Speedo League, I provided Hatfield with full points, doing a PB in my swims, most notable in the final round, where I swam 26.5 seconds in the 50m Backstroke and 55.98 seconds in the 100.
What competitions do you have planned for Semester B?
BUSA LC Championships , County Championships, British LC Championships.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
Medal in all backstroke events at BUSA LC champs.

RUGBY SCHOLARS

Martyn Lever talks about his experience as a UH Scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
I have been training with Hertford and playing for them on Saturdays; I have played the last 4 games for the 1 st team. I’ve also played two games for Saracens A league side on Monday nights. I attended and played in every game of the Uni team and was involved in the England Uni trials, awaiting the team selection.
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership?
I have found it very valuable in helping me recover from games by using the pool and for rehab. The gym has helped me gain some size and aided me in my knee rehab. It has also helped in developing and maintaining my fitness levels. In general it has developed my physical fitness.
In what competitions have you represented the University in Semester A?
BUSA league – won every game we’ve played apart from one, which means we are top of the league and England Students/Uni trials.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
To win thee BUSA league with the Uni team and play the rest of the season in Hertfords 1 st team . Hopefully represent England Uni’s and play in some county 1 st team rugby.

GOLF SCHOLARS

Elliott Meachen talks about his experience as a UH Scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
Captained University of Hertfordshire golf team to 5 wins out of 5 matches. I have an undefeated personal matchplay record so far. I have qualified to play in the BUSA South Eastern Regional Strokeplay Qualifiers where I hope to gain enough merit points to qualify for the finals. In addition I have nominated myself to represent Great Britain in the World University Games in Bangkok later this year.
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership?
Barry (health and fitness coach) has been exceptionally helpful in putting together a gym programme to concentrate on the golf aspects and logistics. The membership has been a valuable key to building up my strength and motion.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
Return to the gym and build more strength and motion;
Win the BUSA league and get promoted to Premier league;
Finish in the top 26 for the individual Strokeplay to get through to the finals where a good finish is achievable;
Win the Championship Playoffs (team event following BUSA league matches) and win the SESSA golf tournament scratch prize at Pinner Hill;
I would like to win the University team and club of the year which would cap off our excellent golf season.

TRAMPOLINING SCHOLARS
Julie Gooderick, Charlie Mussino, Phil Dobson
Charlie Mussino talks about his experience as a UH scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
I competed in grade 2 national championships in hull, where I came 11 th missing the top 10 by 0.5. Also in November I competed in an international competition where I came 19 th out of 47, and scored a total mark of 54.8, with a set score of 22.5.
Have you experienced any difficulties balancing your academic requirements with your sports performance?
I have not yet found it difficult; I do have a tight schedule but manage to balance everything accordingly.
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership?
I have found the membership of great use, and I use it when I am at the University.
What competitions do you have planned for Semester B?
There are lots of grade 2 competitions that run all year round but I am aiming to make grade one.
Also I will be representing the University in March for the nationals.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
To achieve what I know I can, and always do my best. I am still trying to validate for grade 1 and hope to do so during my next competition in February. The grade 1 season falls from March to July. If I make it I will have lots of competitions to focus on.

FOOTBALL SCHOLARS
Hannah Garratt-Kirk, Nick Killen (judo, goalball and cricket scholar as well)
Nick Killen talks about his experience as a UH scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
Sermester A has gone well in terms of fitness and strength improvement. During the gym sessions I have improved greatly.
The achievements I can relate to are those of my previous year’s cricket season:
6
th best player of the year award;
4 th low sighted player award;
5 th bowler of year award;
2 nd most improved player of the year award;
4 th young player of the year award.
As for the other sports unfortunately there has not been any competitions, just training.
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership?
I have found the help from the sports village and the facilities there excellent. The support is first rate from my previous experiences in gyms, friendly and capable staff. The facilities too are brilliant, easy to use, and flexible, in that I have relative freedom in the times that I wish to go. I also have been granted permission to use a lane in the cricket nets once a week, if I wish.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
My goals for sermester B are mainly to improve fitness, strength and skill. I wish to start swimming, using the gym 4 times a week, and enter into the fast approaching tournaments. Further objectives are to retain our cup in cricket, which we won last season, and to compete well enough in all relevant tournaments in Football, making England liable to compete in the para limpics in 2008, and hopefully gain sufficient status to compete in London 2012.

Dave Bell
Dave Bell talks about his experience as a UH scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
I came 9th at the BUSA Indoor Champs. Seat raced my way to becoming the top ranked Bow side rower in my group at Leander. I am now aiming to make the top boat for Henley R.R.
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership?
I have found the membership being very valuable, as it makes the transiction between lectures and training very easy. In addition the Sports Village offers great facilities.
In what competitions have you represented the University in Semester A?
At the British Indoor Championships I arrived 9th in the BUSA division and 4th in the Team Race. At the BUSA Splash n Dash I arrived 1st.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
I aim at winning the BUSA Regatta for UHRC in a 1X and 2X with J. Thompson. I wish to win Head of the River/ Henley Royal Regatta with Leander and beat the Cambridge Blue Boat at Head of the Trent.

CRICKET SCHOLARS
Stephanie Davies
Stephanie Davies talks about her experience as a UH scholar in Semeser A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
During Semester A, I have been training with the England Women’s Cricket team at the National Cricket Centre in Loughborough. I have recently been chosen as a standby player for the World Series tour to India in mid February.
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership?
I have found the membership at the Sports Village very useful. It is only a short bus ride away from the campus where I study, and is therefore easily accessible during the day between lectures, and also during the evenings. I can therefore train around my studies without having to travel long distances.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
To continue to use the Sports Village as often as possible by managing my studies and cricket well. Also I wish to continue training with the England Women’s Cricket Team, with the hope of representing England in the Summer series against New Zealand.

Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
Middlesex Challenger – Singles Quartefinals, Staffordshire Satellite – Singles Quarterfinals, BUSA individual – Singles Semifinals, Welsh EBU – Singles 1 st round, main draw, Yorkshire Challenger – Singles and mixed doubles quarterfinals
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership?
Being able to use the facilities at the Sports Village for free has been very beneficial. Not only it has given me local access to great facilities and expertise, but has reduced the travelling, helping my financial situation.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
To continue balancing my training and competitions with my studies and to reach a singles final. I would like the Uni girls team to beat Chichester and get promoted two years in a row. Finally, I would like to sort out my training plans for when I finish University.

Jem Campbell talks about her experience as a UH scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
The 2006 season was great, my best one so far. Towards the end of the year, at the time when I started University, the season was actually coming to an end. However there were a couple of competitions that I have results for:
22th October 2006 – Lau gar Nationals – 2 nd Place
24 th – 28 th October 2006 – European Championships – 2 nd Place
19 th November 2006 – Combat Champions League 2006 – 1 st Place
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership?
I have found it very valuable, and by using the gym I had the possibility to maintain a core to my fitness. In addition, I have used the swimming pool, which allows me to vary my training, but still work on my fitness. The membership has enabled me to maintain a higher level of performance in my sport, which I thought I might not have been able to do before I came to the University.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
To win the British National Championships and to be selected for the Great Britain team to compete at the World championships and win a medal. To win the Irish Open and the National Cimac Superleague Series. From the University's point of view I would like to balance my studies effectively with my kickboxing and all that it entails, and to achieve my best possible marks.
What competitions do you have planned for Semester B?
Cimac Superleague Series, W.A.K.O British National Championships, Watford Open Championships, Irish Open, W.A.K.O Midlands Open

Paul Smith
Paul Smith talks about his experience as a UH scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
2 x-country races 5 th and 7 th, 5km County Champs 8 th and 3 rd in County in PB, Milton Keynes Distance Meet- 2 nd 1500m f/s in PB, BUSA SC Swim Champs 5 th in 800, 10 th in 1500m and 18 th in 400m PB all f/s.
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership ?
In relation to weights/conditioning the use of the equipment and the work with Barry has been vital for my training programme.
In what competitions have you represented the University in Semester A?
BUSA SC Swim Champs November 2006: 5 th 800m f/s, 10 th 1500m f/s, 18 th 400m f/s PB
What are your objectives for Semester B?
My main goal for the University sport is to race well at the BUSA Swimming (feb), Triathlon Champs in May, BUSA X-country champs at Bath (Feb) and possibly Cycling road race champs.
Outside Uni,my main goal is to get in the top 10 at the GB nationals in June and to be selected for the World Cup at Manchester and the World Class Programme.
What competitions have you planned for Semester B?

BASKETBALL SCHOLARS
Tonderai Nyandoro
Tonderai Nyandoro talks about his experience as a UH scholar in Semester A
Which competitions did you take part in during Semester A and what results have you gained?
I sprained my ankle 3 games into the season and recovered three weeks later. I started training with the West Herts Warriors in late October along with starting an intense plyometric program at the beginning of December. In November, having the court to my self once a week enabled me to start on my shooting form from the beginning .Together with individual training and training with the Warriors, my abilities have noticeably improved, and by the game against South Bank I scored my season high 14 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals .It was my best game unfortunately we lost 72 -63.
How valuable have you found the Sports Village Health and Fitness membership ?
The health and Fitness membership has helped me tremendously. My 100m sprint has improved by 1.9 secs ,I have lost half a stone of body fat and I am the quickest player on the university team. In addition, the free weight training and plyometric training has help me with my endurance and overall strength during the Warriors Training sessions, which are directly after the university basketball sessions.
In what competitions have you represented the University in Semester A?
I travelled with the Sussex select team to play the Welsh u20 National team in early October and won by 2 points .I happened to score the winning basket to win 78 -76. The competition was my last regional representation, due to my age.
What are your objectives for Semester B?
I would like to improve my Field Goal Percentage by 20 % and win the remaining of the University games. I will play as hard as I can to help the University team recover from potential relegation. By March 21 st I am aiming at adding 10 inches to my vertical jump and at passing my exams.
